Karim’s great
grandfather, an artist in the mid nineteenth century, led a
small workshop. Even today, the family treasures some of the
finest masterpieces created by the pioneer himself. In the
early years of the twentieth century, Karim’s grandfather
received international recognition for his exemplary
contribution to the development of the art and antiques
market. As a mark of appreciation, he received
several awards that included the Gold Medal
at the
1926 Strasbourg Universal expositions, and the Merit Medal
from the colonial French authorities.
In the 1950's, the family business witnessed
the addition of
two new members who took this passion for arts to new
heights. Karim’s uncle, who specialized in North African and
Moorish tribal art, launched his gallery (Dar Saada). He
retired in 1992. Karim’s father specialized in
French & British antiques from the 17th, 18th and 19th
centuries. He also focused on Ottoman & Persian
antiques, an important segment in his own gallery,
Sheraton Antiques
that still operates today.
Fourth generation galleries
include Nejarine Antiques and "Porte D’ Orient". Both companies strive to retain great
artists and craftsmen who work exclusively for the family to
offer impressive pieces to the markets. Perserving
beauty is also an imporant part of the family tradition. An
eighteenth-century palace in Mararakesh was recently
recoverd and restored to its original beauty and is now
the Narwama lounge
, which today is an UNESCO classified building.
